pyrrhuloxia
I started working on a red bird when Charlie pointed out that it had begun to look like a pyrrhuloxia, a cardinal-type bird he remembers seeing when we went birding in Tuscon four years ago. I like having a husband who is a birder and who has a photographic memory.
Here is my pyrrhuloxia
and from the other side
This coming week is always a tough one for me. There is no school and no story time, no tot time at the recreation center and the playground is under two feet of snow. It is so quiet in Wellesley when you don't celebrate Christmas.
Roxanne has become really focused on death of late and has expressed some interest in writing a will. I tried to explain that she really doesn't need a will because she's three-and-a-half. Yesterday she drew some really lovely pictures with markers and when I told her I was going to save them she said, "What will you do with them when you die?" I hadn't really thought that far.

Hang in there. They do get older and more independent. But o the days are slow sometimes on the way.
Your birds are amazing. I love to come to your sites and look at them. They are alive, and peaceful, and exquisitely made.

My five year old recently was a bit the same, it probably didn't help she went to a funeral with us last month, but every so often, she asks "when you die, will I get this?" They are weird at times. The bird as always, is wonderful.

I love this pyrrhuloxia, the colors are perfect!
This reds are my favorites colors since I was at your daughter age.
I love the combination with the white head and the red stitch round it.
Just beautiful!

Recent talk of death in our house has turned to marvelous conversations and explorations of Ancient Egypt (my Abby is 5). Just a suggestion, since you may be spending a bunch of time at the library in the days to come.
Love the bird! I saw the title of your post and Tucson was the first thing I thought of.
Hang in there!

This bird is awesome - he's striking me in a way that your other pieces haven't. I'm seeing him as a rockabilly bird, with a cool pompadour and funky mod vest-like clothing. To me, he's more of a character than your other birds. I like that.
And as for Roxanne's latest obsession and this week off of school and story hour, I wish you luck. Lots of luck.

Oh dear, no activities and an obsession with death - not a fun combination. I hope it goes well.
